Prof. David J. Malan: Using AI as a Personal Tutor

Please join us for an engaging, interactive, and entertaining discussion about how Prof. Malan and his team have created and are using AI as a personal tutor for his students.  Prof. Malan teaches CS50 which has more than 800 in-person students, and is the most popular class at Harvard.

Using AI as a Personal Tutor

• How do we approximate a 1:1 teacher-to-student ratio through software?

• How can we equip students with a subject-matter expert by their side at all times?

• How can we guide students toward solutions rather than offer solutions outright?

• Please join us for networking, an entertaining presentation, plus an opportunity to ask your own questions!

In Summer 2023 and Fall 2023, Prof. Malan and his team actively tested an AI-powered chatbot, implemented as a virtual rubber duck (a la rubber-duck debugging), developed specifically for CS50.  The CS50 Duck (aka CS50.ai) was first deployed to approximately 70 summer students, then to 1,000's of students online, and finally to approximately 500 on-campus students.  Prof. Malan will discuss the development of CS50.ai, detailing the challenges faced, solutions proposed, and results achieved, all toward realizing a long-held aspiration: a 1:1 teacher-to-student ratio.

An Introduction to Cybersecurity: Keeping Your Computer and Phone Secure

Last year, the most common password, by one measure, was 123456.  And the fourth-most common password was ... password.  (Are either of those yours??)  Suffice it to say we can do better, but there are trade-offs.  Learn how you can keep your own computer and phone (more) secure.  Just how private are your emails and texts?  What's end-to-end encryption?  And just what does incognito mode do?  All this and more.

Digital Event - BTS Elite College Admissions (Hosted by HAEd Boston)

The college application landscape has been radically changing in recent years. Many parents don’t fully understand what it now takes to get accepted into highly selective schools, including the Ivies, Stanford, MIT and more.

In this program, we’ll discuss what you need to know and what mistakes to avoid - - starting in 9th grade - - about topics including curriculum, testing (lots of recent changes!), extracurriculars (most students don’t understand how to approach them in a way that increases their admissions odds, but also makes high school more interesting and less stressful), college application essays (including which advice from admissions officers students should ignore), activity lists, and more.

We’ll also have a Q and A session!

Attendees may receive a 'Certificate of Attendance.' Do you have questions you'd like to submit? Tell us here.

About this event

We invite you to join us for this engaging hour of exploration of best practices and obstacles within the field of Early Education. You'll want to hear the dynamic speakers and sector experts report from the front lines of this field sharing insider perspectives and covering the future of education for the early education field.

Join Dr. Crystal Rose, M.D., Ph.D. and Hannah Shin, Ed.M. co-chairs of Harvard Alumni for Education as they sit around the virtual stakeholder table with invited speakers, lifting the lid on Early Education via an academic virtual round table using the Zoom* platform.

Sector Experts:

Nell O'Donnell Weber, Ed.D.(she/her): is an independent international education consultant with writing, research, policy, and program expertise. Her particular interests include parenting, parental beliefs, early childhood education, literacy, language acquisition, global citizenship, and international education. She is currently working on projects to develop and promote pre-primary indicator use with USAID, a responsible parenting program for the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe in Wisconsin, a program to teach parenting to high school students across Illinois, and improving the measurement of outcomes of a parent empowerment program in Mozambique and Kenya.

Skye R. Regan, MBA (she/her): is a Toronto-based writer, performer, and producer. Most recently, she has shared her insights by teaching children from ages 3-17 in scene study, character, and performance. As an alumna of Harvard and recent MBA graduate, with training in writing and improv from Second City, Skye writes and creates unique IP that foregrounds underrepresented voices in engaging character-driven animated comedies to delight young audiences, making the world a more joyful place for all!

Marlon Davis, Ed.M.(he/his): Marlon has amassed over 25 years of urban public and charter school education experience. His work experience has also provided him with the opportunity to serve in a number of states throughout the country, which has deepened his knowledge and understanding of the challenges that educators face regardless of zip code. Marlon’s professional career in education began in 1994 as a member of Teach for America with the New Jersey Teacher Corps. As an elementary school teacher, his experiences reaffirmed his passion for ensuring high rates of student success and family engagement. It is this drive that led him to pursue a masters degree in education and assume a leadership position in school administration. In 1998, Marlon received his Ed. M. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy via the Principal’s Certification Pattern from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During his tenure in administration, Marlon has served as an Assistant Principal and Principal in traditional K-12 settings and as the Executive Director of a charter school. As Executive Director, Marlon was successful in turning around The Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School, located in the city of Cambridge, into one of the highest performing charter schools in the city.

Marlon went on to assist in the creation of a start-up education software company, Design by Educators, Inc., now called Validated Learning, Inc. (www.validatedlearning.co) The mission of the company is to create smart technology products for educators that save time and provide instant data that can be used to impact instruction. The first product, QuickKey, is an app for iOS and Android devices that uses the camera to turn the smartphone into an optical scanner, so that multiple choice assessments and other information can be scanned, assessed, and analyzed quickly. The app is now available on iTunes and via Google for Android devices. Marlon has served as the Chief Operating Officer and Director of School and District Engagements for Validated Learning Co. He has been very interested in Executive Function skills as a way to boost student achievement in students from low-income environments and gateway cities. Currently, Marlon is an Executive Function Specialist/Family Engagement Manager at the Acera School of Innovation, Creativity, and Leadership.

Zina Noel, Ed.M.(she/they): is a pre-doctoral graduate student in the Human Development and Social Policy program at Northwestern University. Drawing from her background in international development policy and early childhood education, Zina explores the intersection of early childhood and civic society, particularly the impacts of public and social institutions on young children, their families, and their communities. Zina's current research focuses on the nuanced identity development processes for multiracial children, new parents, and informal early educators and how these identities impact and are impacted by the US family and child policy environment. She is also actively pursuing interdisciplinary collaborations and research-practice partnerships that seek to bridge emergent developmental science, family and child policy, and the day-to-day of raising a young child in America.

Previously, Zina worked in research, policy, and strategy development for various educational organizations and initiatives in the US and abroad and in various roles at early care settings across the US. Zina has earned a master's in education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, a post-bac certificate from the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and a bachelor's degree from Lewis and Clark College.
